From my twelve-year journey with alopecia, I’ve learned that everyone’s alopecia journey is different; Embracing alopecia looks different for everyone. When I was younger, I associated acceptance with wearing no wig. While this may be how some have embraced their alopecia, there are endless possibilities to do so. Some argue that wigs are not means of acceptance, for they hide hair loss. I couldn’t agree less. In dealing with a condition striping you of control over your body, wigs are means of empowerment. They allow many in our community to show up feeling their best, most confident selves. Is that not an indicator of self-acceptance and celebration? I hope that in reading this, you recognize that you solely determine what acceptance of your alopecia looks like. Remember that there is no singular alopecia acceptance journey!! Our differences are where we find strength.
